Hip Pain After an Injury

Hip Pain After an Injury — Why It Happens and What Actually Helps

Hip injuries can be surprisingly disruptive. You twist awkwardly during sport and feel a sharp pull. You land heavily after a jump and your hip tightens instantly. Or you lift something at home and suddenly notice a deep ache around the hip or groin. Sometimes the pain is immediate; other times it builds over hours, leaving you stiff, guarded, and unsure what you’ve damaged.

At Blue Sky Chiropractic here in Hamilton, this is one of the most common stories we hear. And it often leads to the same question: “How bad is this — and how long will it take to heal?” To answer that properly, we need to look at how the hip works, why it becomes sensitive after injury, and what actually helps it recover.

Hip injuries are common — and most recover well

The hip is a strong, stable joint designed to handle load, rotation, and impact. But sport, training, and everyday life can challenge that capacity.

Common injury-related causes include:

  • Sudden twisting or pivoting

  • Sprinting or explosive movements

  • Heavy lifting

  • Slips, trips, or falls

  • Overstretching

  • Landing awkwardly

Most hip injuries fall into a few categories:

  • Muscle strain (glutes, hip flexors, adductors)

  • Tendon overload

  • Joint sprain or irritation

  • Labral irritation

  • Bursitis

The reassuring part? Most hip injuries are not serious and respond well to the right care.

Pain ≠ Damage (and why that matters)

Hip pain can feel deep, sharp, or catching — but that doesn’t automatically mean something is torn.

Research shows that:

  • Many people with no hip pain have “abnormal” findings on scans

  • Pain is strongly influenced by inflammation, muscle tension, stress, and movement confidence

  • Avoiding movement can prolong recovery

After an injury, the hip often becomes protective and sensitive.
This is normal — it’s your body trying to keep you safe.

But when protection becomes over-protection, pain can linger longer than necessary.

Why hip injuries sometimes take longer to settle

The hip doesn’t work alone.

It relies heavily on:

  • The lower back

  • The pelvis

  • The core

  • The glutes

  • The hamstrings

  • The upper back and rib cage (for rotation and gait mechanics)

If any of these areas are stiff, weak, or overloaded, the hip has to compensate — especially after an injury. This is why some people feel like their hip “just won’t heal.” It’s not that the hip is broken. It’s that the system around it needs support.

Why rest alone usually isn’t the answer

After an injury, many people instinctively stop using the hip or rely on short-term relief like pain medication.

While rest and medication can help in the early days, relying on them alone can lead to:

  • More stiffness

  • Reduced strength

  • Slower healing

  • Ongoing sensitivity

  • Loss of movement confidence

Medication can absolutely play a role — especially during a painful flare — but it doesn’t improve the underlying mechanics that help the hip recover.

Most hips heal faster with the right combination of movement, reassurance, and targeted care.

How a chiropractor at Blue Sky Chiropractic can help with hip injuries

At Blue Sky Chiropractic, we take a whole-body approach to hip injuries. Your first visit includes a detailed assessment to understand what’s driving your symptoms — looking at posture with thermographic imaging, whole-spine movement patterns, lower-back and pelvic function, hip mechanics, joint motion, muscle balance, lifestyle factors, and stress load.

From there, we create a tailored programme of care designed around your goals, preferences, and comfort level. This may include gentle chiropractic adjustments or firmer, more hands-on manual adjustments (we offer a range of techniques to suit different needs), muscle-release work, hip-specific rehabilitation, gait retraining, and a structured plan of home exercises to support your recovery.

If appropriate, we can also refer you for further investigations — such as X-rays, an ultrasound scan, or an MRI scan — to gain more clarity and ensure you receive the right care at the right time.

Our aim is simple: to help you move better, feel better, and return to the activities you love with confidence.

Three great exercises for hip injury recovery

If anything causes sharp or worsening pain, stop and seek guidance.

1. Hip Pendulum Swings — Restore gentle movement

How to do it:

  • Hold onto a support

  • Gently swing your leg forward/back and side to side

  • 30–60 seconds each direction

Why it helps: It reduces stiffness and encourages early, safe movement.

2. Glute Bridge — Build early-stage strength

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back with knees bent

  • Lift your hips toward the ceiling

  • Hold for 2–3 seconds

  • Repeat 10–12 times

Why it helps: It activates the glutes, reducing strain on the hip joint.

3. Hip Flexor Stretch — Reduce anterior hip tension

How to do it:

  • Kneel on one knee

  • Gently shift your weight forward

  • Keep your torso upright

  • Hold for 20–30 seconds

Why it helps: It reduces tightness that can irritate the hip after injury.

What else helps hip injuries recover faster?

  • Gradual return to movement

  • Avoiding long periods of immobility

  • Improving pelvic and core control

  • Managing stress and sleep

  • Strengthening the glutes and deep hip muscles

  • Staying active within tolerance

Clear guidance and reassurance also play a major role in recovery.

When should you get your hip checked by a chiropractor?

You should seek professional assessment if:

  • Pain isn’t improving after 1–2 weeks

  • You can’t walk normally

  • Pain interferes with sleep or work

  • There’s weakness, catching, or giving way

  • You’re unsure what’s causing it

Early reassurance and the right plan can make a significant difference.

The bottom line

Your hip is resilient, adaptable, and designed to move.

Most hip injuries recover well with the right combination of movement, reassurance, and guidance. Chiropractic care can help you understand what’s going on, calm things down, and restore better balance and ease through your hip, pelvis, and lower back.

If hip pain is stopping you from training, walking, or sleeping comfortably, we’re here to help.
